Happy February 21st . . .

. . .Otherwise known as National Caregivers Day in 2025!!
Thematic days come and go, however, National Caregivers Day is an opportunity to recognize each other. Caregivers are a hidden, yet vital workforce. We matter to our loved ones, family and friends, and yes even the healthcare system. Without us the healthcare system would be even more overwhelmed.
In honor of today, you can access a free screening of a caregiver documentary called “Unseen.” Even if your circumstances aren’t mirrored in the film, it is still worth viewing. Stories are powerful - they allow people into our experiences. And, they remind us we are not alone.
Check out this broadcast schedule if you can’t catch the screening. And, take a closer look at this information packed site. It offers background on the origins of National Caregivers Day and caregiver tools. The site is worth bookmarking for caregivers and others who want to learn more about caregiving.
While we’re celebrating our fellow caregivers, let’s also amplify the need for federal, state, and local supports.
Caregiving is a bipartisan issue. The pandemic provided a springboard for action. Caregiving was becoming a mainstream topic across government, public, and private sectors. Today, that attention seems to be fading. We need to keep the spotlight focused on caregiving to ensure legislators act on behalf of caregivers. Areas that need attention include the Older Americans Act and Medicaid.
The Senate approved the renewal of the Older Americans Act last December. The bill would provide funding for programs that keep adults aged 60+ independent. However, the House has yet to approve the funding.
Medicaid provides services for adults and children throughout the country. It may face considerable cuts. The program funds a host of programs including day programs for older adults.
If you haven’t already, please reach out to your representative. Let them know your concerns and needs.
